Presenting new epidemiological and diabetes-related impact data.
The number Ones consists of four diabetes workshops, which will take place in four different cities in one year. The cities will be chosen after Maria Claudia has mapped the incidence of Type 1 diabetes in the country.
Each event will include two parallel workshops: one for parents and one for people with type 1 diabetes.
The main objective of the programme is to improve the health and quality of life of people living with type 1 diabetes in Peru, by educating them about the disease and creating a support network. In between workshops, close communication will be maintained with health centres as well as with people with diabetes and their families through the Young Diabetics Association Facebook page for general counselling, emotional support and inclusion in the diabetes community.
The project is going ahead as planned and meetings have already been held in Ica, Lima and Chiclayo. They were all attended by children living with T1D and their parents and have been great successes. For instance, the first workshop in Ica (city no. 2) was held on June 30, 2018. Parents and caregivers sat together in a room with a nutritionist, while Maria Claudia took care of the children with type 1 diabetes.
