YLDs’ Regional Action Plan for Europe, “The year of change - #RoadtoWDD18”, has been developed in collaboration with YOURAH: IDF Europe’s Youth Advocate Group. The plan focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles through sporting activities. Regular physical activity is important to lead a healthy life. This is especially true for people with diabetes, for whom physical activity helps improve both physical health, through stabilising blood glucose levels and mental health, through socialising and self-empowerment. In collaboration with YOURAH, the candidates have launched the “eUrMove Challenge”, a project that aims to encourage people to engage in sports.
As part of the action plan, each YLD candidate participating in the regional action plan has organised at least one event linking physical activity to diabetes care in their respective countries. YLDs aim to encourage people to engage in regular physical exercise over the long term. A key objective is to have at least 40 participants in each event. The success of these events will be measured by the total number of people having been encouraged to participate.
Some of the activities to date include:
Dimitris Kaperdanakis (Greece): physical activity sessions at the 2018 HellenicDiadFed mini-conference on 8/9 December
Maartje Roskams (Belgium): Bootcamp session for teenagers (WHEN)
Rachel Portelli (Malta): Motivational dancing session “What’s your type of diabetes dance?”
